The Mangalitsa
Our herd of Mangalitsa (or Mangalica) pigs is genetically pure and are pasture fed. Their pasture is supplemented by 10-gallons of organic buttermilk a week, locally produced feed, spent brewers grain from the Bitterroot Brewery, and organic vegetable trimmings from the Good Food Store in Missoula. They are a heritage breed from Hungary and produce an exceptionally marbled cut of meat with tremendous stores of fat back and leaf fat. It was “developed in the mid-19th century by crossbreeding Hungarian breeds from Szalonta and Bakony with the European wild boar and the Serbian Šumadija breed. The Mangalitsa pig grows a thick, woolly coat similar to that of a sheep. The only other pig breed noted for having a long coat is the extinct Lincolnshire Curly-coated pig of England”. They are considered a “Lard pig” by some, with it taking much longer to come to butcher weight (275lb+) than most all varieties of pig found on the market today.
Swallow-bellied Mangalitsa pigs
Our pigs are pasture raised, fed quality feed, organic vegetables, organic buttermilk, brewers grain, and in the fall, as many apples and cider pressings as they want.
Breeding Program
Our sows and gilts are bred with only certified, papered, purebred boars so as to retain the purity of the breed. Piglets and weaners are available for purchase when we have them.
